Dhumal throws open art exhibition Oct 23- Oct 25, 2011

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on Sunday inaugurated the three-day-long art exhibition-cum-painting workshop showcasing some of the finest works of five women artists — all former fine art teachers — who have chosen Shimla to strike a chord with local culture.

“At an age when people are trying to market their own works, it is an unique effort on part of these five artists to showcase their work and also become a part of the workshop. The organisers, Chail Heritage Foundation,a NGO that promotes arts, culture, adventure events deserves credit for this,” said Dhumal.

Sanjay Sood of the Chail Foundation said: “There are a total of 40 exhibits carefully chosen for their relevance. In fact, it was chief minister who suggested that such an event should be organised in the town.”

The five artists are Rajinder Pasricha, Ambalicka Sood Jacob, Sukhranjan Kaur, Daljit Kaur and Jasmine Kaur.

Inspired by the story of an infant born with a life-threatening disease, Brampton artist Daljit Gill’s work in acrylic about a one-winged blue bird is a commentary of hope triumphing over adversity.
Gill’s painting along with the works of some 16 South Asian artists from– across the GTA and abroad – will be on display until Aug. 7 at Beaux-Arts Brampton.
The show features a gamut of art forms such as sculptures, photographs, graphics and prints, said Jay Jaswant, a Brampton artist whose idea it was to show the collective works of Canadian artists with South Asian roots.
“The idea behind this exhibition–first one ever to be hosted in Brampton – is to bring the works of various South Asian artists from the community and give them an exposure so that they can start exhibiting their works,” Jaswant said. “Most of the paintings are about the villages, cultures and customs of Punjab. What is interesting is majority of the artists whose works are featured (at Beaux-Arts) have never had a showing or an exhibit of their works in Canada before.”
He said the exhibition attracted individuals from as far as Vancouver, Montreal and Boston.
Gill who’s an art teacher said most artists such as herself are forced to put away their love for art in the back burner and take-up other jobs as there’s little or no financial security in the profession.
She said the GTA artists’ exhibition allowed her interact with others and study their techniques and ideas. Her vibrant painting in cadmium, red, yellow and tones about a blue bird is part of a series: Fertility, life and hope, Gill said.
“ This painting is special because it touches on all three aspects - fertility, life and hope,” she said. “Without fertility, there would be no life and without life there would be no hope.”
